Following a trip to her native Tanzania, Jacqueline Kibacha was inspired by the culture of beading, spending time with the women who produce the colorful beaded jewelery traditional to the Maasai people of Tanzania and Kenya. On returning to her London studio she embarked on a collection in honor of her Tanzanian roots and also in celebration of her own personal style and flair for the bold and artistic.
The collection entitled “Uhuru’s Wings: Freedom to Fly” incorporates Maasai glass beading, thousands of hand sewn crystals, hand dyed feathers and metallic vintage accents. With pieces such as Mwiba (thorn) bangle, Uhuru’s (freedom’s) wings collar and the Waterfall necklace it describes the evolving through trials, to self discover and then finally, obtaining the wings to fly to freedom.
The soundtrack to the collection was played at Heart 365’s London Fashion Week show and is an original piece of music. In keeping with the beading tradition of story telling and poetry, the words were written by Jacqueline Kibacha during the course of creating the collection. The final song – “Life” is a collaboration between Jacqueline Kibacha and French music producer Dominique Lépine.
All of the shows attracted celebrities such as celebrity hairdresser Stuart Phillips, fashion Icon Emmanuelle Ray and many of the top media outlets and buyers from both in the UK and international....And here is Jacqueline Kibacha (with the baby) during her show..
