Leila's arrival in Ghana

The Insignia Group, which organises Miss Universe Ghana, conferred the title Obaa Pa (Woman of Substance) on Leila Lopes for her selfless humanitarian service since being crowned Miss Universe 2011, spyghana.com reports.

The coronation event, organised for her by the Angolan Embassy and Ecobank Bank Ghana, was held at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra on 10th June, which culminated into the launch of the 2012 Miss Universe Ghana search.

The reigning Miss Universe represented Angola at the 60th Miss Universe Pageant in Rio Janeiro, Brazil – and went on to become the second black African woman to win the title.

Organizers of Miss Universe Ghana, the country looks forward to welcoming Miss Lopes to demonstrate that Ghanaians are 'the friendliest people in Africa'.

“We are delighted that the first Miss Universe titleholder we have the pleasure to host is a product of Angola; a product of Africa. We are most proud of her because she is testament that Africa and African women can compete on the international stage and excel. We hope this visit will be a source of both pride and inspiration for the young women of Ghana”, said a statement.

Lopes has been on a tour of SOS Villages and Orphanages across West Africa.

She said her commitment and dedication towards children and orphans in Africa will never wean, adding that more efforts needs to be done to lift millions of Africans out of poverty and also educate Africans about the dangers of HIV/AIDS.

Leila Lopes is expected to visit Ghana on June 9-12 to formally launch the Miss Universe Ghana competition in an exclusive event to be hosted by Yayra Nego, Miss Ghana Universe 2011, in the capital city of Accra.

Moreover, it also said that aside from Ghana, she is also touring ‘Senegal, La Cote d’Ivoire, Togo and Nigeria’.
